The Solo-Couple Retreat: Luxury Wellness Spas Built for Two

The wellness industry has a children problem. Specifically, almost every high-end spa retreat on earth is filled with families during school holidays, which are precisely the times when working couples are most in need of rest. We sought out the exceptions: genuinely adults-only wellness properties where the facilities are never compromised by the presence of small people who would rather be at the pool.

Six Senses Douro Valley, Portugal

This converted nineteenth-century wine estate in the Douro Valley is, in our assessment, the finest wellness retreat in Europe that is actually accessible. The spa programme is serious — functional medicine assessments, tailored movement plans, sleep optimisation protocols designed by in-house practitioners — and the surrounding landscape is among the most beautiful on the continent.

Children are permitted, but the emphasis of the property is so firmly adult — wine tastings, vineyard hikes, evening chef’s tables — that families rarely book. The DINK sweet spot is a long weekend from Thursday to Monday, arriving in time for dinner and leaving after Sunday brunch.

Aman Nai Lert, Bangkok

Urban wellness is its own category, and Aman Nai Lert — set in five acres of Bangkok’s most verdant garden district — does it better than anyone. The spa is among the largest in the Aman portfolio, with an entire floor dedicated to Ayurvedic treatments. The pool is private. The rooms are some of the most serene in a city that never stops making noise.

The context is what makes this one: Bangkok has extraordinary food, extraordinary culture, extraordinary shopping. The retreat is a base from which to engage with all of it — and a sanctuary to recover from the engagement.

We sought out the properties where the facilities are never compromised by the presence of small people who would rather be at the pool.

Chiva-Som, Thailand

The original medical wellness retreat and still the best. Chiva-Som doesn’t use the word “spa” — it calls itself a “health resort” and the distinction is meaningful. You arrive with a health consultation. You leave with a programme. The 58 treatments available range from conventional physiotherapy and acupuncture to the more rarefied — neuro-linguistic programming, craniosacral therapy, and a sleep clinic that requires a separate booking.

Minimum stay is three nights; most guests who get serious results stay for seven or more. The food programme — lower calorie, high nutrient density, designed to support whatever your practitioner has recommended — is extraordinary of its kind.

How to Approach a Wellness Trip as a Couple

The most productive couples’ wellness retreats start with separate consultations and separate programmes — you almost certainly have different deficits and different goals — but share the downtime. The mistake is to try to do everything together, which usually results in a compromise programme that serves neither of you fully. The win is arriving with an agreement: mornings are yours individually, afternoons are shared.
